Break The Bias – International Women’s Day
Today is International Women’s Day. This year’s theme is Break The Bias.
To celebrate, Newman Tuition’s resident Poet, Peju, penned the following:
IMAGINE a world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination!
A world that is diverse, equitable and inclusive!
A world where difference is valued and celebrated!
How do we move from these concepts as IDEALS to them becoming a REALITY?
BEFORE WE CAN BREAK THE EXTERNAL BIAS, WE NEED TO CONQUER OUR INTERNAL BIAS.
Ladies
Take your place
Own your stage
You take up sacred space!
– to ROUSE the WARRIORS within us – I TITLE THIS ANTHEM…
Look at me. Look inside me.
Don’t just look through me
I’m that powerful silent force called “Woman”
I’m not untitled
I’m woman
W.O.M.A.N
Worth my name in gold, I stand before you bold!
Ordained in precious stones, though in shape I may resemble cones
Malleable to survive any situation, be it serious dilemmas or the constant isolation
Adorned by scars of pain, beat down by the sun and rain
Nourished I am, by praise, appreciation and a tasty leg of lamb
This is MyStory. Listen to my Voice!
I AM WOMAN!
Look at me. Look inside me.
Please don’t just look past me.
I’m that vulnerable beautiful noise called “Woman”
I’m not entitled
I’m woman
W.O.M.A.N
I believe in who I am
I have faith in who I’m meant to be
I trust where I’m going
I accept who I’ve been called to be
I don’t need a title from you to shine
I don’t need permission from you to show up
I don’t need your approval to speak out
I’m W.O.M.A.N
Wonderfully made, I wield my weapon, others to shade
Originated from royalty, crowned with silent splendour, genesis of the Queen Bee
Made to last, though I sustain unrecorded blast after blast
Awakened to make my mark, my footprints follow the rules of the strongest bark
Neither untitled nor entitled, I refuse to be stifled
This is MyStory. Listen to my Voice!
I stand here
With innumerable titles
I stand up
Though constant is my wobble
I stand out
No reason needed, no apologies yielded
I AM WOMAN!
Beautiful Powerful Silent force
Vulnerable Beautiful Powerful noise
WOMAN!
Don’t look past me
Don’t look through me
Look at me
Look within me
And SEE ME!
